Metal braces were long considered the best treatment for straightening teeth, and they remain popular today. However, many people are now turning to Invisalign, “the clear alternative to braces,” instead. Invisalign’s smooth, clear, medical grade aligners gently shift the teeth into the desired position. Read about the ten most common Invisalign questions here.
What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign uses a series of custom-made aligners rather than metal brackets and wires. You will wear each set of aligners for two weeks or as directed and then switch to a new set at home. We will see you just once every four to six weeks for treatment monitoring.
Invisalign begins with 3-D digital modeling of your smile. We will then morph the model to show you what to expect from each phase of treatment including the results. We will use this model to create your customized series of aligners.
Aesthetics and Comfort
Though it is not always pleasant to think about, first impressions count. Many people are reluctant to date, interview for jobs, meet with clients, or have their picture taken with a mouthful of metal. Invisalign is virtually invisible, meaning that you can smile and laugh with ease.
Invisalign is also significantly more comfortable than braces. Having braces adjusted is often painful, and the metal brackets and wires tend to poke and scratch the sensitive tissues of the mouth and tongue. Invisalign is gentle, and there are no rough edges.
With braces, your dentist is in control. We will put them on your teeth, adjust them, and remove them. If you have an emergency such as a loose bracket or a popped wire, you will need to come in for an immediate appointment. You cannot eat certain foods such as popcorn or whole apples, and you must learn a whole new oral hygiene routine.
With Invisalign, you are control. We will place attachments on your teeth and teach you to insert and remove your aligners. You can take out the aligners to eat your favorite foods, and change to the next set at home. We will keep an eye on your progress, but it is up to you to manage your own treatment.
When comparing the cost of Invisalign to the cost of metal braces, be sure to include all of the costs. Colored metal and other upgrades, as well as adjustments and emergency visits, add to the base price of braces. Invisalign’s transparent pricing system includes all dentist appointments.
Some dental insurance plans cover both braces and Invisalign. Some cover one or the other, and some cover neither. Our office staff will help you understand your coverage and determine your out of pocket expenses for both options.
